Cryptocurrency highlights: week commencing january 9th

In our spotlight this week are Solana (SOL), Ethereum Classic (ETC), The Graph (GRT), Optimism (OP), Decentraland (MANA), and Ethereum (ETH). The selection of these digital assets is based on multiple criteria, including notable price surges, significant news events, as well as technological advancements that have positively impacted these tokens.

The cryptocurrency market appears to have shaken off some stagnation. Although there’s no certainty that this upward trend will persist, many cryptocurrencies have demonstrated notable growth compared to the previous week. Remarkably, several assets have surpassed general market performance recently.

The last week saw Solana (SOL) gaining an impressive 45%, fueled by the spike in popularity of the Solana-based BONK token. A 30% rise marked Ethereum Classic’s (ETC) performance, driven by positive developments regarding the network’s new reference rates. In anticipation of the Shanghai upgrade, Ethereum (ETH) also experienced a substantial rise of 10% over the week.

The Solana Foundation, which possesses approximately 3.24 million shares of FTX Trading LTD common stock, in addition to around 3.43 million FTT tokens and 134.54 million SRM tokens from Project Serum, a DEX, is striving to progress independently of outside assistance.

Priced at approximately $16.55, Solana began the previous week at $11.30, experiencing a significant rise.

To put it simply, the hash rate signifies how rapidly a crypto mining device operates. Ethereum Classic’s hash rate is currently at 107.58 TH/s, reflecting an increase of nearly 10% from its December 2022 low, facilitating enhanced transaction speed and network profitability.

Currently, ETC is being traded at about $21.26.

Optimism, a prominent Layer 2 scaling solution utilizing rollup technology, is expected to have a dynamic year in 2023. Such scaling frameworks enhance both the speed and security of blockchain networks. Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, has elaborated on rollup scaling, which has undoubtedly brought more attention to Optimism, currently valued at roughly $1.31.

Metaverses and blockchain-powered gaming continue to intrigue investors, with Decentraland benefitting significantly from this sector’s revival, leading to a token increase of 29%. The CME Group’s announcement on including reference rates and real-time indexes for metaverse crypto assets, including Decentraland, is likely why MANA appreciated in value, beginning last week at $0.31 and now valued at about $0.40.

Ethereum, being the second-largest token by market cap, underwent a major transition to a new consensus mechanism last year. However, tokens staked could not be accessed until the implementation of the Shanghai upgrade. This crucial upgrade is poised to alter this, marking a significant milestone in Ethereum’s evolution. Having started at $1,216 last week, ETH now trades near $1,322.
